NEW ORLEANS -- What was only a rumor a month ago is now reality: Former Miller County and Georgia football star Charles Grant will soon no longer be a member of the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.
New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis confirmed the move Thursday afternoon. Loomis says he'll be released today when free agency begins.
Grant, the Saints' starting defensive end who was going into the third year a of incentive-laden, seven-year, $63 million contract he signed in 2007, was drafted out of Georgia in 2002. Grant, who was due to make $4 million next season, was one of the Saints' two first-round draft choices that year.
Grant is eighth on the Saints' career sack list with 47 and has started 106 games, including all 16 regular season games in 2009.
However, a torn triceps kept him out of the playoffs last season, when the Saints won their first Super Bowl. He also missed part of 2008 with a similar injury.
Grant will be home in Southwest Georgia next Saturday for his annual "Kids Day Out" event he hosts each year in Colquitt.
