LOCAL COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Busy day for GSW as basebal,l team rolls, while tennis teams fall in heartbreaker and softball falls in rout

AMERICUS --- Georgia Southwestern's baseball team put up a staggering 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep on Montevallo on Saturday, winning Games 1, 17-8, followed by a 10-1 victory in Game 2. GSW improved to 8-4 on the season and began Peach Belt Conference play 2-0.

Kevin Carroll went 3-for-5 with two doubles, 2 RBI and two runs scored. Trent Dooley, Paschel Poston, Jared Allen and Michel Coffey all had two hits apiece.

But perhaps the highlight was Byron Haynes' solo home run, marking his fifth of the year.

In Game 2, Americus native Jody Sellars was dynamite, tossing a complete game to improve to 4-0 after scattering six hits with two strikeouts. The lone UM run was unearned, so Sellars' ERA remains 0.00 this season in 28 innings of work.

Dooley and Bud Long each hit three-run home runs, while Jared Allen, Zack Stanton and Chris Lingham recorded two hits apiece,

GSW closes out the series today vs. Montevallo at 1 p.m.



On Saturday, the Lady Hurricanes opened with a 5-0 loss to the invitational hosts, West Georgia.

Gabby Buck went a perfect 4-for-4 in the losing effort. Lyndi Duff added a pair of hits.

Mariko Nomura (4-6) took the loss, allowing the deciding run in the fourth inning. Nomura went five innings, scattered five hits, struck out two and surrendered the one run.

Southwestern then lost to West Alabama, 7-2, to wrap up the day.

Brooke McLemore led GSW from the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. She drove in a run and scored a run.

Starter Jessica Martin (2-6) gave up five runs (three earned) in four innings of work to get the loss.

The Lady Hurrianes play No. 14 Nova Southeastern and Barry today in the final day of action at the UWG Invite.



The Georgia Southwestern men's and women's tennis teams each fell a match short in their bids to break into the win column in Peach Belt Conference play with a pair of 5-4 losses to North Georgia on Saturday afternoon at the NGCSU Tennis Complex.

The Lady Hurricanes (4-7, 0-5 PBC) fell behind 3-0 after doubles action, before taking four-of-six matches on the singles side.

At No. 1 singles, Leady Cuellar defeated Stasa Vujoseciv 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Lauren Grogan won for GSW at No. 3, defeating Ashley Marie Jordan 6-3, 6-1. Former Lee County star Melinda Vansant was victorious at No. 5 over Sara Vaughters 6-2, 6-1. Katie Adamson earned the final victory for the Lady 'Canes, a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 6.

Southwestern is back in action today with a noon match at Lander.

The Hurricanes (3-5, 0-3 PBC) fell behind 2-1 after doubles action and split the six singles matches with the Saints.

Southwestern's lone win in doubles came at No. 1 where Victor Pinones-Haltenhoff and Ryan Bartz defeated Luciano Paes Neto and Daniel Aquilon, 8-3.

Pinones-Haltenhoff was the 'Canes only double-winner, picking up a victory at No. 1 singles, defeating Paes Neto 6-3, 6-2. Sebastian Munoz won for GSW at No. 4, defeating Adrian Saulais 6-1, 6-4. Rashad Carson earned the final victory for the Hurricanes, a 6-0, 4-6, (10-5) win over Andy McMaster at No. 5.

Southwestern is back in action today with a noon match at Lander.
