Lee Chamber plans arts fest

LEESBURG -- The Lee County Chamber of Commerce's fourth Under the Oaks Art Fest will kick off tonight with an artist reception in the Opal Cannon Auditorium of the county's T. Page Tharp Governmental Building.

During the 7 p.m. reception, awards will be handed out for art entries that will be on display in the auditorium through Saturday.

The art festival will kick into high gear Saturday with events planned from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Recreation Department/YMCA Gymnasium on Starksville Avenue North and in front of county governmental offices. Among the activities are a sidewalk chalk art challenge, performances by a number of local arts troupes, and the music of, among others, the Lee County High School chorus and jazz band.

Art activities booths will be available at a $3 charge for children ages 12-under, and local businesses and organizations will have additional booths for entertainment, demonstrations and refreshments.

A grand prize of $200 will be given to the winner of a sidewalk chalk art challenge, which will be ongoing from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The second-place finisher will receive $100, while an honorable mention selection will receive $50.

Camp Chaos, Lee County High School's children's theater troupe, will present "Elephants, Clowns & Circus Sounds," the musical tale of Melvin the Magnificent Clown from 10:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Cost for the performance is $1 and is a fundraiser for the troupe's planned trip to the Scotland Fringe Festival.

- 12:30 p.m., Darton Cavalier Dancers

- 1 p.m., Lee County Middle School select choir

- 1:30 p.m., LCHS praise dancers

- 2 p.m., Arts contest winners announced

- 2:30 p.m., LCHS jazz band
