ALBANY -- Sheriff Kevin Sproul will accept the recommendations of a hiring panel to promote two existing deputies to colonel to fill vacancies created by the retirement of two department heads, he says.
Jail Administrator Col. Doug McGinley and Operations Director Col. Lee Shiver will each retire this year, Sproul said.
To fill the void, a panel of deputies, sheriff's officials and community members poured through applications before making a recommendation to Sproul to promote current training officer Capt. John Ostrander and Capt. Mark Shirley -- the department's fiscal and government officer -- to the posts.
Sproul introduced the men to the Dougherty County Commission during the board's work session.
McGinley, who is also chairman of the county's Retirement Fund Planning Committee, will likely remain on that board as an ex-officio member following his retirement, allowing Tax Director Denver Hooten to take over as chairperson.
