DAWSON -- Coming off their second consecutive GISA Class A State Championship, Terrell Academy is already thinking about repeating thanks to the fact the team's top three players -- juniors Marlee Locke and Millie Foster, and sophomore Alex Barfield -- are all returning next season.
Of course, just when they thought the accolades for this season were over, they kept coming recently.
The Lady Eagles' trio were all voted onto the GISA Class A All-State First Team, while their coach, Keith Jones, won his second Coach of the Year award in as many seasons.
"My mom asked me (recently) when she was gonna be able to read it in the paper, and I told her, 'Oh, Momma, it's not that important,' " Jones laughed. "I just told her what was important was the recognition for the girls and the fact that we won (the state title again)."
Foster led the way in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14 points and eight boards a game. Barfield, meanwhile, was a close second, averaging 13 points and eight rebounds an outing, while Locke averaged nine points.
"There were a lot of girls on our team who worked hard and didn't get as much recognition, but these three deserved it. They really did," said Jones, whose team started out its state title defense this year 5-6 before going on a run after the Christmas break. "They were the three who returned from last year's championship team and it was really on their shoulders whether we repeated or not.
"And at the end of the day, they held up their part of the bargain. I mean, back-to-back state titles, three All-State players and (another coach of the year) -- I really can't complain."
