LEESBURG -- Robert Peavy and Houston Alligood were named winners of the art and photography competitions, respectively, in the Lee County Chamber of Commerce's fourth Under the Oaks Art Fest judging completed Thursday.

Peavy's painting "Brandilyn Rose" and Alligood's photograph "Frustrated Green Heron" were judged tops among 49 entries in the annual arts competition.

"We were set up to expect a smaller number of entries this year given the downturn in the economy, but we lacked by one having the same number of entries as last year," Lee County Chamber of Commerce Director of Marketing and Membership Lisa Davis said Friday. "We are very pleased with the response we got from artists in the community.

"A lot of people commented on the number of excellent entries (during an artists' reception Thursday), and it seems that it gets tougher and tougher to judge the competition each year."

Daniel DelVecchio's "Black Lab" earned second-place honors in the art competition, while Emily Arnold's "Rhonda" was third. Myric Hornbuckle's "The Major" received honorable mention.

Doug Wolfe's entry entitled "A Gentle Existence" was runner-up in the photography competition, followed by Mike Zoellick's untitled photo in third place and Diana Helton's "Out of Here?" which received honorable mention.

The arts festival is scheduled to continue today with a sidewalk chalk art competition and a number of performances by acting, dancing and musical ensembles.

"We had a great turnout at the artists' reception, and we're counting on a big turnout for (today's) events," Davis said.

Events, which will be held at the Recreation/YMCA Gymnasium on Starksville Avenue North and in front of adjacent government offices, will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m.
