ALBANY -- Wal-Mart has closed on property in East Albany for a new SuperCenter where construction was most recently projected to start at next month.
Dougherty County Administrator Richard Crowdis said this morning that money for the project has been transferred and the property at Clark Avenue and Cordele Road has been closed on.
Also, the store has already leased 60 percent of its outparsels available for smaller business to locate in. The Wal-Mart is expected to be 175,000 square feet.
"It certainly means good things for the people of Albany, especially in east Albany," Mayor Willie Adams said this morning. "It's a promising development both in terms of job creation and tax benefits ... this is the anchor for the TAD (tax allocation district), which will generate money for redevelopment."
Adams says he's heard estimates of 350-500 new jobs associated with the store.
Most recent projections had work on the property starting in April.
More details will follow as they become available..
