ALBANY -- Lee County attorney Craig Mathis was arrested Friday afternoon following what Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals said was a "lengthy investigation," into possible drug activity.
Mathis is being housed at the Lee County Jail, charged with one count of possession of a schedule II drug with intent to distribute and one count of possession of a schedule IV drug, Rachals said.
Mathis is reported to have been in possession of Aderol -- an amphetamine -- and Xanax.
"This was the result of a lengthy investigation involving the GBI, the DEA, the Lee County District Attorney's office and the Lee County Sheriff's Office," Rachals said.
Sheriff's officials say Mathis was arrested during a sting operation at a residence around 4 p.m.
He is currently being held without bond pending a bond hearing, which Rachals said was likely to take place Sunday.
Mathis was the face of an attempt to recall former Lee County Commissioner Jo Ealum and is a licensed and practicing attorney.
