AUBURN, Ala. -- According to a published report late Wednesday by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, UTEP coach Tony Barbee was hired to take over the men's basketball program at Auburn.

The newspaper cited a confidential source close to the situation because the Tigers had yet to make a formal announcement.

Barbee led UTEP to a Conference USA title this year, as well as the NCAA Tournament as a No. 12 seed before falling to Butler in the first round. His hiring comes less than two weeks after the firing of Jeff Lebo, who was quickly hired by East Carolina.

According to the Ledger-Enquirer, Auburn interviewed several candidates, including former Tigers star and Los Angeles Lakers special assistant Chuck Person before deciding on Barbee.
