Chief James Carswell said the fire is believed to have started when a candle, used to help illuminate an occupant's efforts to fill a Coleman lantern with fuel, ignited the fuel and set the structure aflame.
The occupant, who escaped without injury, was using the lantern as a light source after electrical power to the house had been cut, Carswell said.
The fire is estimated to have caused $20,000 in damage.
