ALBANY -- The Sherwood girls soccer team secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GISA Class AA state playoffs Monday with a 3-1 win against Tiftarea behind goals from Mary Margaret Charles, who scored two, and Katie Foster. All three scores were assisted by Paige Barker.

The Lady Eagles actually tied for first with Georgia Christian and Terrell Academy, but will be the No. 3 seed because they lost out on tiebreakers to both schools.

"We've been playing really well lately and have only lost one game since spring break," said SCA coach Jason Schults, whose girls have now won six of their last seven games. "Ever since the break, everything's just come together."

The Lady Eagles' overall record is 14-10-1, while they improved to 5-2-1 in Region 3-AA with Monday's win.

Just four days after stunning No. 2 seed Mary Persons in the GHSA Class AAA state tournament's first round, the Westover boys soccer team goes into Columbus today to face the top seed in its bracket. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Columbus State soccer field.

Westover beat Mary Persons, 4-2, on two goals by Danny Brown, one by Bridger Ferrell and another by Peter Morton. Westover trailed, 2-0, in the second half before storming back to score four unanswered and pull the upset.
