The GISA girls state soccer tournament officially got under way Friday as Class AA No. 1 seed and Region 3-AA champ Terrell Academy rolled in the first round, 8-2, against Monsignor Donovan Catholic.
Millie Foster had a masterful day, shutting down MDC in goal in the first half, then coming out to play forward and scoring two goals in the second half. Maura Milliron and Kristin Waldal also scored twice each for Terrell, while Marlee Locke and Alex Barfield each added one.
The Lady Eagles get a week to prepare for their Elite 8 showdown next Saturday in Dawson with the winner of today's game between Bulloch and Arlington Christian.
Region 3, No. 3 seed Sherwood also opened Friday, beating No. 2 seed Westminster Christian, 1-0, behind a goal from Katie Foster and an assist from Mary Margaret Charles. But the story of the game was senior goalie Samantha Scoggins, who stopped seven shots in the shutout win. Sherwood will play the winner of Heritage and Robert Toombs next Saturday.
No. 1-seed and Region 3-AAA champ Deerfield hosts Holy Spirit in Class AAA action at home at 4 p.m.
