Granvil Smith and his brother Jamal Smith were both arrested by members of the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit and the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office Tuesday night, ADDU Commander Major Bill Berry said.

Berry said that the ADDU learned through the District Attorney's office that Smith may be selling prescription drugs so they set up a buy in the parking lot of the KFC restaurant at the intersection of Oglethorpe Boulevard and North Jefferson Street.

The Smith brothers are alleged to have sold 35 pills of Xanax and 35 pills of the pain killer Oxycontin to an undercover agent in exchange for $700, Berry said.

Granvil Smith, who was hired by the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office in January 2009 to be a jailer, was terminated by Sheriff Kevin Sproul Wednesday morning he said.

Because Granvil Smith's job put him in close contact with inmates at the jail, Sproul said that his department has launched an investigation to determine if any alleged drug deals were done inside the facility.
