Albany Rotary Club awards scholarships

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Rotary Club handed out scholarship checks Thursday at Doublegate Country Club to a graduating senior from each of Albany's seven high schools.

The seniors, who picked up checks for $1,200 each, were selected from a pool of nominees by a three-member Rotary scholarship selection committee.

The scholarship winners were:

-- Hannah Hughes from Byne Christian. Hannah will attend Shorter College this fall and plans to major in early childhood education.

-- Kelsey Jones from Deerfield-Windsor, who will attend Mercer University and plans to pursue a double major in psychology and English.

-- Deandria Jones from Dougherty High, who will attend Albany State University and plans to pursue a major in accounting.

-- Kelsi Leverett from Sherwood Christian, who plans to major in bio-medical engineering at Georgia Southern University.

-- Justin Pride of Monroe High, who said he would attend Morehouse University and pursue undergraduate and master's degrees in sports medicine.

-- Georgia STAR Student Michael Lomax of Westover High, who will attend Yale University, said he is "going to school to learn. I'll probably go into pre-med, but I wouldn't rule out something in the arts after college."

Ida Barrett of Albany High will attend the University of Georgia. She was unable to attend the awards ceremony because she was testing.

In other matters, Club President Jesse Way said Thursday's weekly meeting will be held at Phoebe Northwest.
