Package store robbed at gunpoint

ALBANY, Ga. -- A local liquor store employee was robbed at gunpoint Monday morning, when a masked gunman came into Brother's Package on the 1100 block of Newton Road.

According to police reports, Freddie Barner Jr., 54, was working behind the counter of the liquor store around 9:45 a.m. Monday when an unknown black male walked into the store armed with a handgun.

The suspect demanded money from the register -- in the process, collecting an undetermined amount of cigars, beer and cash. The suspect, who is described as having a light-brown complexion, a medium build and was last seen wearing a dark colored jacket and blue jeans, fled on foot.

Robert Taylor, owner of Brother's Package, said the gunman was wearing a blue bandana over his face during the robbery and that the fire alarm went off during the crime.

"I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the gun did fire when he was trying to get in the register. He (Barner) didn't really stick around to find out (if it was a mistake the gun went off)," said the owner.

Taylor said this was the first time the store had been robbed and that after Monday's incident the store is spending the rest of this week updating security measures.

The liquor store owner said he plans to install bullet-proof safety glass to where potential criminals would not have access to his employees.

"We are also going to be updating the security systems and cameras," Taylor said.

The store is scheduled to be closed down for the rest of the week while the new security measures are installed.

Authorities said the armed robbery is still under investigation and anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS or the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100.
