NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercer baseball team won its first Atlantic Sun Championship since 1983 and clinched their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a 7-3 win over Jacksonville late Saturday evening.
And the Bears can partially thank two former Deerfield-Windsor stars for getting them there.
Thomas Carroll, a junior, roped an RBI single in the game to put Mercer ahead early, then later blasted a double — scoring two more runs — to pad the lead to 6-2.
Evan Boyd, last year’s Ray Knight Albany Herald Player of the Year, also played a role in the win and was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Boyd is hitting .314 this season, just ahead of Carroll’s .312. The Bears will find out their NCAA opponent after it’s announced today.
