ALBANY, Ga. -- A Westover High School counselor was arrested Saturday night after police say she was under the influence while driving a golf cart that struck a woman.

Capt. Jimmy Sexton of the Dougherty County Police Department said Monday that Catherine Knight Chandler, 40, was arrested and charged with a D.U.I, reckless driving, serious injury by vehicle and headlights required after she hit a 32-year-old Christal Potter while driving a golf cart at a Halloween block party in the Doublegate area.

According to authorities, at approximately 9:41 p.m. Saturday Chandler was driving a golf cart north on the 2300 block of Pendleton Street with the headlights off when she struck Potter with the vehicle.

"When the officer arrived at the scene he reported that the street has about 200 to 300 people on the street," said Sexton. "The officer contacted some witnesses who identified Ms. Chandler as the driver of the golf cart."

According to authorities, Chandler at first told officers that she was not driving the golf cart when it struck Potter but after witnesses confirmed Chandler's identity as the driver she admitted to police that she was driving the golf cart.

"She (Chandler) struck (Potter), who was in the street in front of (a residence) on Pendleton Avenue," said Sexton. "She was walking with her children and had to push them out of the way of the golf cart so that they would not be hit."

Authorities also said Monday that Chandler had a white male passenger in the golf cart with her when she struck Potter. According to witnesses, after Chandler exited the vehicle the unknown male left the scene of the incident with the golf cart.

"We are still looking for the passenger and are trying to locate the golf cart," Sexton said Monday afternoon.

Officers said the suspect could face obstruction charges and tampering with evidence if found.

After she refused to cooperate with a sobriety test, police reports indicate Chandler was arrested and transported to the Dougherty County Jail.

After being struck by the golf cart, Potter was transported by EMS to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for severe injuries to her left leg.

Authorities said Monday that Potter shattered her left leg and broke her right knee cap.

Dougherty County School System Public Information Director R.D. Harter said the school system has scheduled a meeting to discuss the incident as Chandler is a counselor at Westover High.

"There will be an administrative meeting about the incident," he said Monday.

Sexton said anyone with any information about the unidentified male passenger of the golf cart or where the vehicle is should contact the Dougherty County Police Department at (229) 430-6604 or Crime Stoppers at (229) 436 - TIPS.
