Albany Sports Hall of Fame looking for new inductees

ways had a rich athletic heritage. Athletes from our community have excelled, not only at the local level, but also in colleges and universities, professional sports and even in the Olympics.

As a way to recognize these achievements, the Albany Sports Hall of Fame was founded, and will celebrate its 25th anniversary at a banquet to be held at the Albany Civic Center on April 11, 2011. At this year's banquet, not only will a new class of athletes be selected, star athletes from each local high school be recognized, scholarship winners be announced, but a special recognition will be given to the first class of athletes inducted in 1987, 25 years ago.

But to make that happen, the Albany Sports HOF needs the community's help.

Athletes who are inducted are selected from nominations sent in from the community to the Hall of Fame selection committee. Nomination forms can be picked up from the office of Johnny Seabrooks -- Dougherty County Director of Athletics -- at Hugh Mills Stadium or from the information office in the School System Administration office. Nominations for this year should be sent in before Jan. 1 to:

This year's guest speaker will be Loran Smith, the former longtime sidelines reporter for the University of Georgia football program. Smith is also an author and guest columnist for The Albany Herald.

Proceeds from the annual HOF event go to fund scholarships for selected Southwest Georgia high school students who are planning to attend Albany State University, Albany Tech or Darton College.
