TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center will open its 2010-11 Broadway Series with a bang Monday as it presents "Legally Blonde: The Musical," the 2007 Tony Award-nominated Broadway production based on the 2001 movie that made Reese Witherspoon a major star.
In its first year on Broadway, the Jerry Mitchell-directed/choreographed hit earned seven Tony Award nominations, 10 Drama Desk nominations and an Outer Critics Circle Award. In 2009, "Legally Blonde: The Musical" won Touring Broadway awards as best new musical, best production design and best choreography.
Mitchell, who won a choreography Tony for his work on 2005's "La Cage Aux Folles" and received nominations in the same category for smash hits "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," "Hairspray" and "The Full Monty," will take on the same roll for the Tallahassee production.
He is making his West End debut as director of Legally Blonde." Mitchell will be assisted by Associate Director Marc Bruni and Associate Choreographer Rusty Mowrey.
Musical fans will be taken, in song, from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway's brightest new heroine, Elle Woods, accompanied, of course, by her chihuahua Bruiser.
The one Tallahassee performance will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, priced from $15 to $76, are on sale at the civic center box office and at Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be charged online at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (850) 222-0400 or (800) 322-3602.
Group and student discounts are available.
