ALBANY, Ga. -- Rep. Sharon Cooper, R-Marietta, said the best way to promote change is to get involved -- a message she promotes in the second edition of her book "Taxpayers' Tea Party."
The book, which was first published in 1994 with an introduction by Rush Limbaugh, is a veritable how-to on how to become politically active and why it is important to do so.
Cooper said when she first wrote the book, she was upset and angry at the Clinton administration and its view on health care in 1992.
A nurse, Cooper said she was outraged at some of the proposed legislation that "just didn't make any sense."
Without a clue as to where to begin, the representative said she contacted her congressman and flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with him because "I didn't know he had an office here."
Eventually Cooper would go on to campaign for a seat in the House and was recently re-elected for her eighth term serving the 41st District of Georgia.
"My book is really about getting involved and how to do things like contact your representatives, write a letter to the editor and how to deal with our political system," she said. While the title "Taxpayers' Tea Party" might draw to mind the crowds of sign-toting protesters during the recent mid-term elections, Cooper said she wrote the book before the current tea party movement.
"I completely revised (the first edition), but this time I had the advantage of being an elected official so I know what it is like from both sides," she said. "(The book) has a Republican bent to it because I'm a Republican, but anyone can use its resources."
The book, which also contains political cartoons by cartoonist Chuck Asay, has a significant list of national political resources and contact information for each senator and representative.
Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, said this in his introduction to Cooper's book:
"(Cooper's) book ... is once again needed and the citizen activism it represents is once again vital to getting America on the right track. I hope every tea party activist in America will take the time to read Sharon's book and share its insights with their fellow citizens. Together we can once again defeat the forces of big government and high taxes and get America on the right track to jobs, prosperity, safety and freedom."
