ALBANY, Ga. -- Sherwood Christian Academy is spreading a little Christmas cheer early this year when its students perform Irving Berlin's Broadway musical "White Christmas."

Cassandra Golden, director of the musical, said the show is one for all ages and that the students have been working tirelessly on the show's production numbers.

"It's a comedy and definitely a family show," said the director. "Kids will like it, and the show has three really big production numbers that are great."

The musical is based on the 1954 film "White Christmas" and is centered around the story of two GIs, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, who became Broadway performers after World War II and their attempt to help their former Army general bring a snow-filled Christmas to the general's Vermont inn while also falling in love with two performing sisters -- Betty and Judy.

The role of Phil is portrayed by James Strawder, and his partner Bob is played by Andrew Bode. The sister act is rounded out by Madison McClearn, who plays Betty Haynes, and Taylor Reynolds has the role of Judy Haynes. Rounding out the main cast, is Chris Dervan as the general, Kelsey Spencer as Martha and Emily Thompson as Susan.

Golden will be directing the play along with co-director Lindsey Sanders. Barbara Pippin is in charge of choreography.

Golden said more than 60 Sherwood Academy students are involved in the production, and she has been amazed by the talent this year.

"They kind of surprised us," she said. "Most of them had never danced before, and they picked up the dance steps quickly. Now they look very confident."

Golden said in addition to the dance numbers and music, the show's costumes are very elaborate and colorful.

"There are some phenomenal costumes in this show and a lot of costume changes," she said. "I have never had as many costumes for a play before."

The musical will be performed at Sherwood's newly remodeled fellowship center with performance scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.

Admission for the show is $10 for advanced tickets and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchase from the Sherwood Baptist Church office or Sherwood Christian Academy.
