Victim shoots attackers

ALBANY -- Two gunmen collected lead rather than gold when they tried to hold up a friendly card game about 1 a.m. Thursday.

When two armed robbers entered a small house at the back of 4412 Woodcrest Drive and demanded money from the five men who were playing cards and shooting pool, one of the card players pulled a handgun and began shooting, stated an Albany Police Department report.

"One of the suspects was struck (with at least one bullet) and the second suspect ran," said Phyllis Banks, APD spokeswoman. "The victim also fired shots at the second suspect."

Police have not released the names of the suspects or the victims involved in the attempted robbery. One suspect was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The other found his way to Palmyra Medical Center.

"The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time," Banks said.

In an unrelated armed robbery about 9 p.m. Wednesday at 511 Dorsett Ave., a woman lost her purse to a gunman, a police report stated.

A man drove up in a silver Pontiac Grand Am to Latoyna Wagstaff, 26, brandished a rifle and demanded her purse, the report said. The purse with debit cards was stolen, it added. The robber fled in the Pontiac.

The robber who held up Wagstaff is described as a black man, about 6 feet tall and wearing a hoodie.
