Event to benefit autism, CMN

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Junior League of Albany is continuing its mission to help raise funds for community members who they say need it most.

The organization is hosting "The Triple Crown: A Night at the Races" at Doublegate Country Club Oct. 23.

The event, designed to mirror the Kentucky Derby, is set to start at 7 p.m. This is the third time the Junior League has put on the event.

This year, the fundraiser will benefit the Albany Autism Center and Children's Miracle Network.

Along with horse betting, the event will include a whiskey tasting and entertainment by DJ Billy Ocean. Casual cocktail attire is preferred.

"Ladies can wear their favorite Kentucky Derby hat," said event chair Jessica Wagnon.

In previous years, the event has attracted roughly 150 people.

"We hope it will be bigger and better (this year)," said Junior League of Albany President Jenni Carpenter. "It's a fun way to raise money for Albany Autism and Children's Miracle Network."

The cost is $50 per person, which includes $20 worth of "funny money" to use for betting. Tickets may be purchased at Custom Interiors; Doherty, Duggan & Rouse Insurors, and at the event.

Those who register by Thursday will be able to purchase and name a horse for $25, or a race for $100.

The Junior League's commitment to Children's Miracle Network and Albany Autism Center was established as a result of signature projects the organization has opted to take on.

This is the first year of a three-year commitment the League as agreed to with the Albany Autism Center, while the organization has maintained a long-term relationship with Children's Miracle Network.

"We've had a relationship for years with CMN, and we wanted to continue that," Carpenter said. "We are always looking for a fun way to raise money that the community will embrace and be proud of.

"There have been a lot of ladies in our membership who have benefited from Children's Miracle Network. It's personal to a lot of members."

The Junior League just completed a three-year commitment to GraceWay, Carpenter said.

"A Night at the Races" is the first of two fundraisers the organization will host this year. The next one will be "Beers and Band," which is expected to be held in the coming months.
