Georgia Southwestern's J.P. Griffin finished second overall in a huge field filled with top college players recently after firing a 66 in his final round.
AMERICUS -- Georgia Southwestern sophomore J.P. Griffin was named Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week on Friday by the conference.
Griffin finished in second place out of 75 participants in the stroke-play portion of the 14-team AFLAC/Cougar Invitational, ending the event with a two-under-par 140. He shot a tournament-low 66 in the second round, one of only three players to go that low this year and tied for the second-lowest round in the PBC this season. Griffin finished just two strokes back of Barry's Daniel Stapff for the tournament title.
Griffin, who is from Glennville, Ga., became the third GSW golfer to win an Athlete of the Week award from the PBC since the Hurricanes began competing in the conference in the fall of 2006.
Teammate Craig Gibson won the award last year after winning the AFLAC/Cougar Invite and Adam McKenney was named PBC Golfer of the Week on Sept. 26, 2008.
