Lance Cpl. Raymon Johnson, of Midland, was conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, and was based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.
"He was the point man on a security patrol and stepped on an improvised explosive device," his father, Greg Johnson said.
The 2006 graduate of Shaw High School in Columbus was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 1 Marine Expeditionary.
Raymon Johnson had wanted to become a Marine since childhood.
Johnson's death came one week after another Georgia Marine, Cpl. Stephen C. Sockalosky, was killed during combat. Sockalosky, of Cordele, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune. He was 21.
