ALBANY -- Sherwood Christian Academy quarterback Terrance Burnette found Vashon Gaines all alone in the back of the end zone and hit him with a 10-yard TD pass with 22 seconds left to lift the Eagles to a 33-27 victory against Southland on Friday night at Sherwood.
It was Burnette's third TD pass of the night. He completed 14 of 23 for 132 yards and had two touchdown passes to Mack Green, who finished with five catches for 80 yards.
Southland, which trailed most of the night, grabbed a 27-26 lead with 2:41 left in the game when Jake Hood hit Kevin Greene with a 5-yard TD pass and Wes Downs added a two-point conversion run.
With his team in desperate need of spark, Philip English, who scored two TDs and rushed for 132 yards on 16 carries, returned the ensuing kickoff to the Southland 24 yard line with 1:47 left, and SCA drove to the 10, where the Eagles faced a third-and-seven. That's when Burnette threw the game winner.
With no time outs remaining, Southland tried to make a final heave into the end zone but SCA's Chris Roberts came up with his third sack of the night to end the game.
"This loss pretty much knocks us out of the playoff race," said Southland coach Tim Goodin, who saw his team fall to 2-4 in GISA Region 1-AAA and 4-5 overall.
With the win, SCA moves to 5-3 for the season, and 4-2 in the region. The Eagles are currently the fourth seed with two games left.
"It was a good football game," SCA coach Reggie Mitchell said. "It could have gone either way."
