ALBANY, Ga. -- A 54-year-old man died Friday morning after he was beaten with a length of pipe while on the 400 block of East Broad Avenue.
Frankie Carr died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered during the assault.
According to Albany Police Department spokeswoman Phyllis Banks, a driver on East Broad Avenue about 2 a.m. saw an unidentified man striking Carr with what appeared to be a pipe.
The officer's report stated, "I responded in normal mode in reference to a fight at the intersection of Church Street and Broad Avenue. I observed a subject lying in the lot next to the road."
Dougherty County EMS personnel responded and took Carr to the hospital. He was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes to an hour later, officials said.
At the corner, across from the empty lot, under a street sign that marks Broad Avenue and Church Street, someone had placed a bouquet of plastic flowers Friday.
A woman who lives up the block from the corner on Church Street said that the flowers were not there before Friday morning.
