ALBANY -- An Albany State University Golden Ram was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week by the Southern SIAC.
Junior running back Robert Welton, a Macon native, received the honor after his stellar performance against the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Saturday, at Albany State University Coliseum.
Playing in his first home game as a Golden Ram, Welton scored two touchdowns on rushes of 26 yards each to lead the Golden Rams to a 28-13 victory over the Panthers. Welton rushed for 103 yards on 14 carries, averaging 7.4 yards per rush. He led the ASU "Gold Rush" to 403 total offensive yards, including 236 rushing yards.
Golden Rams Jacob Hardwick and Brandon Hamilton received honorable mention recognitions for their performances against Clark Atlanta. A key anchor on the "Dirty Blue" defense, Hardwick, a senior linebacker, recorded seven tackles, including five solos, with 3.5 for a loss of 28 yards. He also had two sacks for 23 yards and one quarterback hurry. Hardwick and the "Dirty Blue" held the Panther offense to 50 total offensive yards.
Hamilton, a freshman kicker from Atlanta, kicked four successful PATs to put points on the board for the Golden Rams. He recorded 262 yards on five kickoffs, an average of 52.4 yards per kick. He also had a solo tackle.
Welton, Hardwick and Hamilton play with the Golden Rams against the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers on Saturday, at 2 p.m. in Tuskegee.
