ALBANY, Ga. -- It's time to clean out the closets, offices, and storage containers and recycle those old or broken electronics.
From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful and a handful of volunteers will be processing and packaging old electronics to be recycled at the Albany Civic Center parking lot, KADB Director Judy Bowles said.
Past events have been wildly successful, she said, and with weather expected to cooperate, she says she hopes this year will be no different.
There is no charge to drop off most electronics, but there will be a $10 fee to process television sets.
Vacuum cleaners, washers, dryers, freezers and refrigerators will NOT be accepted, Bowles said.
Also television sets encased in wooden consoles will not be accepted.
The event is designed to reduce the amount of toxins that leech into the soil when merely tossed into a landfill. According to Bowles, electronics account for only 2 to 5 percent of all landfill capacity but are responsible for up to 70 percent of the toxins found in the landfill.
Large businesses, government entities or schools interested in donating can call KADB to schedule a pickup of equipment.
