ALBANY, Ga. -- Two women were taken to a hospital after being struck by a car as they walked between cars across Westgate Drive at its intersection with Dawson Road around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"One woman suffered serious injuries," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department spokeswoman. "The other had scrapes and scratches from the roadway."
According to police spokeswoman Phyliis Banks, Marie Fredric, 48, and Marjorie Duval, 44, walked North across Westgate and were struck in the West bound lane by a blue 2007 Honda S2000 driven by Janice Haddrill of Leesburg. Both Marie Fredric and Marjorie Duval are sisters and are Haiti natives. Marie Fredric has been living in Albany for a couple of years. Marjorie Duval has only been in Albany for a week and had plans of returning to Haiti Saturday.
A blue 2008 Honda S2000 made a left from Dawson Road south onto Westgate Drive, Banks said. The traffic on Westover Boulevard was stopped at the traffic light, she added.
The two women were not in the crosswalk when they were hit, Banks said. They tried to cross Westgate Drive between the cars stopped at the light when they were hit, she added.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, who did not want their names used, said that the women were jaywalking. They added that the driver could not have seen them as they walked out from between the cars.
