SHELLMAN -- The Randolph Southern girls softball program, which made the switch to fast pitch a decade ago like many of the rest of Southwest Georgia's teams, won its first Region 2-A title in school history Tuesday night with a hard-fought 9-8 victory against Crisp Academy.
"I feel lucky to have such a great group of girls but unfortunately I think they celebrated by going home and studying for their quiz (today)," first-year Randolph Southern coach Rand Ragan said with a laugh.
Madison Ragan, the coach's daughter, was the winning pitcher on this momentous occasion, striking out nine batters and also going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Parker Rigsby was also 2-for-3 as she blasted a triple and notched an RBI and Alana McCook was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI. Other Lady Patriots who contributed from the plate included Amber Boyette (1-for-2, double, RBI) and Gaby Jackson (1-for-4, two RBI).
The win, which improved Randolph's overall record to 7-3 and a perfect 5-0 in region play, now means that the Lady Pats will host the second round of the GISA Class A state tournament in Shellman on Oct. 6 after they receive a bye in the first round.

LEE COUNTY 3, CAIRO 1:
Lindsay Tompkins struck out four and also had a hit as the Lady Trojans were limited to just four base knocks, but found a way to win to improve to 13-5 overall by going ahead 3-0 in the third inning and never looking back.
Alyson Marshall, Natalie Shiver and Hailey Scott had Lee's other three hits.

WORTH COUNTY 8, BERRIEN 4:
Haley Ellis and Lauren Potts both homered as the Lady Rams avenged one of just two losses all season Tuesday. Kimberly Lee added a triple as Worth improved to 21-2 overall.

SHERWOOD 10, CALVARY CHRISTIAN 0, (4):
The Lady Eagles improved to 14-4 on the season as pitcher Anna Laine Brock (13-4) gave up one hit and had four strikeouts in the win, while Jordan Cox (3-for-3) and Paiton Couch (home run, 3 RBI) paced the offense for the Lady Eagles.
Sherwood's next game is Thursday at Deerfield-Windsor -- its last region game of the season.
