Register to vote; deadline approaches

ALBANY, Ga. -- Time is winding down for those who haven't registered to vote in the Nov. 2 elections, even as early voting is under way.

Officials with the Dougherty County Elections Board note Oct. 4 -- less than two weeks from now -- is the last day an unregistered resident can sign up to vote in the upcoming general election.

The early voting period started Monday and 233 voters had taken advantage of it in Dougherty County by Wednesday afternoon, election officials said.

"We've actually been very busy; I've been surprised by the turnout," Sharon Armbrust, an administrative assistant in the Dougherty County Elections office, said Wednesday afternoon. Among the contested offices that will be determined in November are governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, U.S. representative for the Second Congressional District and U.S. senator.

Residents can obtain voter registration forms in room 220 of the Government Building at 222 Pine Ave., public assistance agencies or any public library. And once a voter is registered. Through Oct. 29, voters can cast ballots 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays in room 220 of the Government Center. During the week of Oct. 25-29, a second location at the Candy Room, 125 Pine Ave., also will be available for early voting from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
