OMAHA -- Less than a month after being cut by the Miami Dolphins when they reduced their roster to 53 players, former Miller County and UGA football star Charles Grant signed with a United Football League team, the Omaha Nighhawks, late last week.
Grant won a Super Bowl ring last season with the Saints last season after playing every regular season game at defensive end -- but then missed all of the playoffs with a tricep injury and was cut loose by New Orleans at the end of the year. He was picked up by the Dolphins this offseason and signed to a two-year contract worth up to $4.5 million, but never made it on the team's final roster and wasn't picked up by another NFL franchise.
Omaha, which has also signed other former NFL stars like Jeff Garcia, Ahman Green and Cato June, as well as one-time college Maurice Clarett, won its season opener this past weekend, 24-23, against the Hartford Colonials in front of a record crowd 23,067. Grant, recorded one tackle.
Grant made 53 tackles and had 5 sacks with the Saints last season.
