ALBANY -- We all know that the Disney princesses have gotten themselves in a pickle once or twice, and wouldn't it have been great if maybe they had had a mentor or an older sister to turn to when they needed advice?
"Disney on Ice: Princess Wishes" will partner with Girl Talk to host a special discussion featuring some of Albany's most notable female leaders sharing their valuable experience with 20 young ladies who are mentors and mentees of Girl Talk.
According to The Kinsey Group Founder and Public Relations Director Valerie Harris, "The Truth About Tiaras" event will include arts and crafts projects, a meet-and-greet with Disney princesses and discussions about issues girls are facing today.
Crystal I. Drake, southeast regional PR manager for Feld Entertainment, said it is important to show young women that dreams can come true if they believe in themselves.
"Our event aims to connect young girls with older mentors at a critical time in their lives when defining self-image, personal goals and strategies to succeed is happening in their lives. For a young woman to know and celebrate her individual character and beauty on her own terms -- that is the true meaning of being a princess," said the PR manager.
Girls from Southside Middle School and Byne Christian School are expected to attend, but the event is open to any girl.
The panel will include notable women such as president/CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce Catherine Glover, vice president of Albany Dougherty Economic Development Commission Andrea Schruijer and several others within the community.
Drake said it is important for Feld and Disney to connect with the communities in more ways than just entertainment.
"In every city we visit, we look for opportunities to truly connect with communities in a positive way," she said. "Partnering with Girl Talk, an organization already deeply committed to Albany, presented us an excellent way to do that."
The event will take place Thursday at the Albany Welcome Center on Front Street at 4:30 p.m.
Girl Talk is a nationally recognized student-to-student mentoring program that offers fun, positive weekly meetings, community service projects and friendship-building activities for middle school girls.
