Head librarian Cole headed for post in Augusta

ALBANY, Ga. -- Teresa Cole, the head of the system of libraries in Dougherty County, is stepping down to take a post in Augusta, according to a press release issued Monday afternoon.

Cole has accepted a position as director for the East Central Regional Library, the release states.

Cole has been director of the Dougherty County Public Library and its satellite libraries for more than five years.

"We're very excited for her, but also sorry to see her go," Guy Craft, chairman of the library's board of trustees, said.

Under Cole's watch, the library system has continued to work towards embracing new technology in an effort to expand its access and retain its position as a research hub for southwest Georgia.

Upgrades to allow for wireless connectivity to the library's computer network, automatic sign in for computer use and self-checkout were added to the library during her tenure, the release states.

"The library has also added a number of downloadable books and computer databases to its website, as well as popular programs such as the Mango Languages program and the Live Homework Help site for students."

Cole, along with county staff, worked to facilitate the conversion of what had formerly been a furniture store on Dawson Road to the Northwest Public Library.

Additionally, the central library downtown is on the brink of a $5 million overhaul that will expand the children and young adults section, eliminate some of the tight spaces and blind corridors and expand the library's genealogy department.

"I will be very sorry to leave Albany," she said. "This is a community that very much supports its libraries and that makes it a joy to work here as a director. I am grateful to have had the chance to work with such an outstanding board and staff and will miss them very much," Cole said in the release.

Cole said the board is anticipating the search to replace Cole will take roughly six months and will begin within the next two weeks.

Assistant Director Ashley Moore will take over as interim director while the search is under way.
