ALBANY -- Albany State University will host a fundraiser to support research and heighten public awareness of the affects of low self-esteem on women. The event "Beauty Through the Storm" will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the ACAD Auditorium on the ASU campus.
The VIP and guest mixer, which includes live entertainment, will take place at 6:30 p.m. A fashion show will begin at 7:30 p.m., displaying different styles from America and Great Britain.
"We are so excited about this year's event for several reasons. We will graduate our first class of 'conquerors,' which are women who have completed our program 'Make Up For Life,' and are living after the diagnoses of MS, breast cancer or lupus." said Colette Jenkins, an honorary conqueror. "We will honor community members in the crowd who can say that they have conquered a storm, which is a medical diagnosis. Also, we will award a local individual who we consider as living an 'extraordinary life.'"
"It is ... our board of directors and advisers, sponsors, donors, participants and the community involvement that is making this event one that causes me to agree, we are taking this city by storm," Janice Route-Blaylock, an honorary conqueror and board member, said.
Chosen to Conquer Inc. defines as its mission the empowerment, education and assistance of individuals who are dealing with the devastating effects that follow diagnoses of multiple sclerosis, heart disease and breast cancer.
This is a black-tie event. Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at the door.
