ATLANTA (AP) -- Activist groups have delivered a petition that they say has more than 23,000 signatures to Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to urge him to veto proposed legislation that aims to crack down on illegal immigration.
At a news conference on the steps of the Capitol Monday some held signs shaped like tombstones to emphasize what they say Georgia stands to lose if the legislation passes.
The Senate is expected to take up one of two bills today that contain some provisions similar to those in a tough law passed in Arizona last year . Opponents of the proposed laws say they would harm Georgia's economy and reputation and could lead to civil rights violations.
The petitions were delivered to the offices of Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston.
