ALBANY -- Westover dominated the preliminaries of the Region 1-AAA boys track & field meet at Hugh Mills Stadium on Thursday, and head into Tuesday's finals as the team to beat.

"We qualified everyone,'' said Westover track & field coach Harley Calhoun, whose team racked up 50 points in the three finals that were run Thursday.

Teams had to qualify in all the running events, but finals were held in the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 110-meter hurdles. All other running finals will be held Tuesday, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The field events will begin at 2 p.m.

Monroe's Larry Bellamy won the 110-meter hurdles in 15:09, but Westover's Jackie Childs was second and Westover's DeQuan Davis finished third.

Westover went 1-2 in the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter run.

Jeremy Bonner won the 800 in 2:02 and Cole Koster was second at 2:08. Westover's Greg Thorne won the 1,600 in 5:01 and Westover's Josh Mason was second in 5:02.

"We feel real good about it,'' Calhoun said. "We feel it will carry over to Tuesday.''

The Region 1-AAA girls prelims will be held Wednesday at Hugh Mills Stadium.

Katie Williams picked up her sixth shutout of the season as Deerfield's girls soccer team beat Calvary Christian, 7-0, at home on Thursday.

Casey Kincheloe scored four goals for DWS and Lauren Fulford scored twice for the Lady Knights. Bailey Weed also scored for DWS, which improved to 7-3-1 and 5-1 in the Region 3-AAA race.

DWS' boys team fell to 3-2 in the region race and 6-7 for the season after losing to Brookwood, 1-0 on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles soccer team were on the verge of one of their biggest wins of the season Thursday, ahead 1-0 against Region 3-AAA No. 2 Westfield before giving up a goal with 30 seconds to play that tied it, then losing, 2-1, in overtime. Kaitlyn Gilliam scored the only goal for SCA (10-6, 5-4), which wraps up its regular season Monday at Southland and will likely earn the No. 4 seed going into state.
