ALBANY -- Sherwood Christian Academy quarterback Terrance Burnette became the school's eighth player to sign a college scholarship this year.
He signed with Division II Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.
"I felt (Mercyhurst) had a good football program, but most importantly their education program is really good," said Burnette, who chose Mercyhurst out of a pool of schools that included Thorpe College and LaGrange College. "They have a strict code of grades (first), then football."
Burnette may get a chance early as Mercyhurst, where the backup quarterback blew out his knee during spring practice.
"I've really watched Terrance grow from his first year here until now," Sherwood coach Reggie Mitchell said. "Initially he (kind of) shied away from the leadership role but (starting last summer) we saw a brand new Terrance. He really took on a leadership role (this year) and has had a lot of success at quarterback."
Burnette threw for 10 touchdowns and ran for three this season. He played in the secondary and also played receiver during his career at SCA, He said Wednesday he is open to any position in college.
"I'm willing to play anywhere they want me to," Burnette said. "I just want to help the team."
