ALBANY -- April has turned into a rough month for Craig Mathis.
District Attorney Plez Hardin told The Herald Thursday that a bench warrant has been issued for the former Lee County lawyer after he failed to show at a court hearing earlier this month.
Mathis is facing drug charges after he was arrested by the GBI and the Lee County Sheriff's Office with nearly 50 prescription pills that investigators say didn't belong to him last year.
Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court unanimously decided to disbar Mathis in an unrelated incident for violating rules and ethics of the Georgia bar after it said he used a client's settlement money for personal use.
"I don't know why he didn't show up for the hearing," Hardin said. "We've had no contact with either him or his counsel."
Mathis was out on bond at the time of the hearing.
Chief Lee County Sheriff's Deputy Lewis Harris said that Mathis had not been arrested on the latest warrant and was not in the Lee County Jail.
Mathis was indicted in July on one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and a second count of possession of a controlled substance.
