ALBANY, Ga. -- Within about 24 hours, police charged a man in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Albany State University student Bruce Mullen, an Albany Police Department report stated.

Stephen Lewis, 26, was booked into the Dougherty County Jail and charged with murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a felon and other charges, a jail spokeswoman said.

"Whether he shot or not, because he was part of the crime he is just as guilty as the other person," said Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards. "Whether we catch the other person or not, (Lewis) will be tried just the same as the other guy for the murder."

Police continue to search for 22-year-old Joshua Tremayne Johns, wanted as the "lead suspect" in the Thursday murder at Hidden Oaks Apartment Homes, APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said, adding that Johns was the shooter.

"Witnesses say they heard more than one shot fired," Banks said. "The autopsy will help determine if (Mullen) was struck more than once. We know for sure that he was struck once in the chest."

One gun was recovered, Banks said. A description of the recovered gun remained part of the investigation and was not released. Police are looking for another gun.

The possible motive for the killing also was not released. Banks said the gang unit was not called in to assist. The gang unit would be called if it were a gang-related killing.

Wanted on murder, aggravated assault and other felonies, Johns, aka "lil Flick," was described as 5 feet, 3 inches tall, weighing 129 pounds. His last known address was 1411 E. First Ave. He is known to frequent the Hidden Oaks Apartment Homes at 333 S. Mock Road.

Anyone with additional information on Johns or the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS (8477) or investigations at (229) 431-3288. The Spanish-speaking APD-COP Tip Line is (229) 434-2677.
