ALBANY -- It took more than a month to play the 14th annual Challenge Cup due to inclement weather, but for Doublegate Country Club, it was worth the wait.
Led by head pro Ed Everett, Doublegate won the 14th annual Challenge Cup tournament on its home course Sunday by the largest margin in the event's 14-year history with a two-day score of 650.
The tournament is a battle every year between the four area golf clubs for bragging rights and a perpetual trophy, and Everett led his team to the victory, snatching the cup back from defending champ River Pointe, which finished second with a two-day total of 681. River Pointe was led by teaching pro Sonny Skinner.
Members of the winning team for Doublegate and their two-day score totals were: Drew Broadaway and Dave Hill (65-51), Spencer Davis and Craig Taylor (65-63), Mike Cooper and James Salter (71-62), Everett and Joe Dorner (69-65) and Clay Chester and David Venettozzi (70-64).
Not much separated second through fourth, however.
In third place was Stonebridge, led by head pro Rob Allen, with a two-day total of 684, while in last place with a two-day total of 686 was Grand Island, led by teaching pro Roy Steinberg,
