ALBANY -- A downtown Albany lawyer was named by the city commission to serve as an assistant Municipal Court Judge on an "as needed" basis, Tuesday.

Assistant Municipal Court Judge Ralph Scoccimaro has been serving as the primary judge since Chief Municipal Court Judge Willie Weaver was placed on paid leave by the commission following his arrest on domestic violence charges.

Ward VI Commissioner Tommie Postell originally made a motion that Steven Cannon be named assistant municipal court judge and when corrected by Mayor Pro Tem Roger Marietta, Postell said, "Oh, well all white people look alike anyway."

The comment prompted visual reactions from many on the commission, including Ward II Commissioner Dorothy Hubbard who later called his comment, "inappropriate."

After the body adjourned, Postell said his comment was made in jest and that he didn't believe it was inherently racist.

"That's the way I see everyone," Postell said. "Color isn't a thing to me."

The vote was 4-1 with Commissioner Jon Howard voting against the appointment. Albany Mayor Willie Adams, who was attending a meeting in Camilla, and Commissioner Bob Langstaff were absent.

The vote came following a closed-door session to discuss personnel matters.

City Manager James Taylor said following Tuesday's meeting that there is the possibility during the October trial calendar, that Scoccimaro may have to miss municipal court, which prompted the commission to consider using an as-needed assistant.

As an assistant municipal court judge, Cannon will receive $350 each time he has to sit in on court.

Cannon is president of the downtown merchant's association and is a board member of the Albany-Dougherty Inner City Authority.

Ok... let's see..A city commissioner can make a comment like that? I just wonder, if Mr.Cannon would have said the same thing about a black commissioner, just how long do we think it would take to have him crucified? I can guarantee you the outcry sure would not be just a simple " it was inappropriate". There would screaming & hollering so loud it would deafen you!!! Not to mention screaming for him to step down, make public apologies and all the usual crap that goes on when something is said about a black person. Talk about a racist hypocrite...Mr Postell should step down or be made to step down....fair is fair!!!!

Postell is almost 80 years old with a heart condition and diabetes. I think we should just ignore him after all he is a senile old man.

Did Postell really make the comment that "all whites look the same?". Why is it that a white person is crucified when they do something like this and nothing at all is done to a dark skinned person when they do something like that? Will someone please explain that to me?

<p>@richie..........why in the world should we just ignore it?? So what if he has health conditions..everyone has health issues, the difference is that he was voted into office to serve all and he is just showing all his true colors......He is part of what is wrong here in Albany...I bet if the same comment would have been made about him,Jessie Jackson & Al Sharpton would be on the next plane in here...you friggin' hypocrite....how he could even be considered to run again for office is beyond me! You can know that a white fellow would catch the hinges of Hell if he were to run...BUT we have to consider just what put him & just what wants to keep him in office in the first place.

Albany taxpayers -- please don't let this get swept under the rug! He would be the VERY first one crying racism if it were the other way around and he knows it! He NEEDS to be made an example of, and this is the perfect opportunity.

Ok let me get this stright.City Att. can carry guns and knives to work,Black commissioners can talk about white people, the Mayor can have a body guard and taxi driver at our expense,Judges can pick which cases they can hear or not,Some of them can park in hadicapped parking places and just get a warnning,Judges and lawyers can have cell phones in the court room but no one else can,Some can use tax payers money and dont have to worrie about paying it back..I know i left out alot. But there are so many. This is why Albany is the last place anyone would want to live or have a buissness. And excuse some of my spelling Carlton, but i cant type that good when i am pissed off.And why is it you can never find a lawyer in Albany to fight for your rights against Albany, but they will hellp you if you have a wreck,or get fired,or diabled?Albany,Crook Life City.
