Warrants issued in Saturday shooting

— The Albany Police Department has issued warrants in connection to a Saturday evening shooting that authorities now say was accidental.

Justin Harvey, 17, is being charged with gang participation, reckless conduct, possession of a handgun by someone underage and giving a false statement. He had other pending charges against him as of Monday afternoon.

Dontavious Laster, 20, is also being charged with reckless conduct in connection to the incident.

On Saturday, the two were at a home on the 100 block of Swaggott Road when Harvey handed a loaded handgun to Laster.

The gun went off and a bullet struck Harvey in the pelvic area, the APD said.

Laster drove Harvey to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after the shooting but later returned.

Both men were questioned, and Laster was transported to the Dougherty County Jail at around 10:30 p.m. that night while Harvey remained at Phoebe.

The statement Harvey initially gave to police, the APD said, stated that he was walking near the intersection of Joshua Street and Tremont Avenue when he saw a white four-door car pull up with three black males inside the vehicle.

The statement further indicated that one of the males, sitting in the back seat, rolled down the window and fired one shot at Harvey in the pelvic area.

An investigation by the APD Gang Unit eventually determined that the shooting was accidental.
