MACON -- Police say 18 puppies have been euthanized due to an outbreak of disease that prompted authorities to close the Macon-Bibb Animal Control shelter this week.
Authorities say the puppies were put down on Tuesday after the outbreak of Parvo and Giardia.
Macon police spokeswoman Jami Gaudet said the puppies are the most susceptible to disease.
She said in a statement that 55 other animals were being transferred from the shelter temporarily as workers clean it. Gaudet said animal rescue groups are helping to sanitize the building and assisting with the care and feeding of the animals.
Authorities say the shelter is scheduled to remain closed until Friday.
