Ward VI Commissioner Tommie Postell mingles with supporters after announcing his plans to seek re-election to his seat Thursday.

ALBANY, GA.: Tommie Postell, the controversial mouthpiece for the citizens of Ward VI on the Albany City Commission told reporters Thursday that he will seek another term.

Standing in front of the government center Thursday, Postell said that he wants to ensure that the residents of his South Albany ward are heard when a new mayor is sworn into office in January.

"I believe I need to continue to sit at the table to make sure the citizens of Ward VI are treated fairly. I believe in treating everyone fairly," Postell said.

Surrounded by supporters, including former Albany State Coach Hamp Smith, Postell said that as a commissioner he'll continue to lend support to organizations who work to create jobs, saying that he loves the city and that jobs are the biggest issue in Ward VI right now.

"We love the city. If we didn't love the city, we wouldn't be out here doing this," Postell said. "We need to move forward and work toward a process to get people to work."

While Postell has been behind some notable local legislation over his term — perhaps the most significant being his unrelenting push for an ordinance giving police the authority to fine anyone whose pants are worn too far below their waist — he's also known for his often colorful descriptives and sayings, such as his assertion that cats are "undomesticatable" and, as stated in a recent discussion over the Albany Water, Gas & Light Commission, that "something in the milk ain't clean."

In addition to his role at the commission table, Postell has postured himself as the chairman of the city's Longterm Financial Planning Committee — a joint body composed of members of the city commission and the WG&L board who are stewards of one-third of the funds that are coming to the city of Albany from the Municipal Electric Association of Georgia's Competitive Trust Agreement.

The other two-thirds are split equally among the general funds of the City of Albany and WG&L.

This week Postell found himself in the headlines after he made a comment at Tuesday's commission meeting while appointing local attorney Phil Cannon as the city's assistant Municipal Court Judge that "all white people look alike," drawing criticism and making him the topic du jour in the Sqawkbox.

While Postell didn't address the comment specifically during his announcement, Postell did reiterate his position to the Herald that the comment wasn't racist just before giving his speech.

Amazing, had an individual of another ethnicity made the remarks this man has made over the years about Mr. Postell's particular ethnic group people would have been screaming for their head. Yet this individual displays his prejudice and will probably be re-elected. Very interesting constitutancy he has there. He didn't even feed folks during the flood like Junebug.

Something has been said but it hasn't been reported by anyone. There is a group that wants to have him censured for his comment. If you would like to help and you have a facebook account, please go to Albany Voters for Good Leaders and join the group. A petition is going around to have all city meetings televised again so the voters can keep tabs on what these elected officials are doing or not doing for us. You can also call or write your commissioner and complain about Postell's comments.

Again a member of a governmental body that, in theory, represents ALL people in the city is allowed to make racial remarks with NO comment from the brave editors of this guardian of the people newspaper. The schoolboard is the same, yet, no comment from the editorial board. There is something wrong when commisioners, city and county, judges and schoolboards can make racial comments and blatently pass improper hirees without theHerald making no comments. But what can one expect...

When are the Commissioners going to say ENOUGH? It's bad enough that he makes up words during meetings--funeralize??? How can he get away with this kind of comment??? You can bet that if a white person said anything like that, he/she would be fired, run out of town, banished by the Mayor or hung in effigy. Reverse racism is alive in Albany!

ok ok ok, he made a rude comment....but in Albany Blacks have heard this kind of comments directed towards them for years. Yeah he is wrong, and I dont defend him, but it sounds like he is repeating what he has heard from the other side years ago.....

But at some point this garbage has got to stop. We can not tolerate this, ESPECIALLY from an official elected to represent ALL of his constituents.

the reality is that Postell is beatable - James Williams has said he would run so maybe you should encourage him. Postell is not going to knock on doors and has done nothing for his district - I live in it.

Typical racist! Let the black community keep voting for people like this. They will keep themselves from ever progressing "forward," if that is what you want to call depending on others to solve all your problems. Postell is a joke!

At least you know where Postell stands. He is racist and makes no excuse for it, and that can be dealt with. Knowing that, keeps him from hiding behind an institutional racist veil. As bad as it is to make such a comment it is equally worse to pretend or ignore that it was not said. All of us pay for ignorance and apathy by mere association. I do not want anyone to speak for me. Or for others to assume that I feel the same way because my skin color is the same. He does not speak for all of us in Ward 6.

Postell is just reassuring his followers he hasn't changed. I don't know who has the lower intelligence Postell or "Murfree." Every time they open their mouth they reassure us of their incompetence. I agree if the others. If Cannon had made the same statement about Postell Albany would have burned like the UK.

Elect him and it shows that MLK spoke for thing this man knows nothing about. I am white, but have plenty black friends. All would be welcome in my home at anytime. But to have this man, calling himself an offical, well that was a low blow in itself.MLK wanted us all to sit together,be friends, help one another, put things in the past and go on.Some have,Some cant.We can all be friends no matter of color. But dont be doing what you did Sir.It was wrong and you know it.I thought you were one of only 2 that i have respect for on the commission, now you are City Mang. and i think it went to your head.We had one in there like that,we dont need another one.Amna who can not admit when he is wrong does not need to be in Office anywhere.
