ALBANY, Ga. — Careers in emergency medical, law enforcement, fire fighting and other organizations can be explored by joining Explorer Post 47, sponsored by Albany Dougherty Search & Rescue volunteers.

Volunteers began recruiting for the Boy Scout sanctioned group Saturday behind the Albany Fire Department Station.

“We decided to restart the Explorers as something worthwhile and fun for kids to do,” said Jo Luke, the group volunteer chairwoman. “This is not just about search and rescue; the kids could go in any direction. They can see if they want to be a firefighter, a paramedic, or anything else.”

The program plans to allow its members, young men and women from 14 to 20 years old, to learn about a variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in the fields.

“Years ago we had volunteers and the Explorers,” said Chuck Mitchell, commander of the Search & Rescue team. “Those in the leadership group retired and it wasn’t kept up. Now we are picking it back up again.”

The Explorers program plans to give experience in first aid, map reading and other skills. There will be a part character and leadership building “Lost-in-the-Woods” outing.

Explorers will be lost in the woods with maps to follow home. In years before the same Explorers lost in the woods came to join Search & Rescue and take part in actual rescues.

Luke wrote in a recruitment flyer: “Our basic mission is to be here for you. As young adults this will be your group and we are here to help you learn, grow and develop life skills in a healthy, fun environment. You will actively participate in the planning and organizing of activities. We look forward to teaching you and in return, you will teach us some things too. Life is learning.”

The Explorer Post plans to meet the second Tuesday evening, and the third Saturday of each month. Further details are available from Luke at (229) 338-6768.
