St. Stephen’s Day celebrated at Magnolia Manor
Shirley Brady
I had the most wonderful day yesterday (Aug. 20). I was able to hold a program about a Hungarian holiday St. Stephen’s Day. It is now the Founders Day. Hungary is 1,115 years old.
I put out all my Hungarian embroidery, china, dolls, books, then I presented a film about the country. The Magnolia Room at Magnolia Manor was filled. After the film, I served refreshments among some Hungarian food with cake decorated red, white and green.
The results of the program were tremednous. Everyone loved it. Some people did not know how modern Budapest and the rest of the country is. We have arts, science, operas and symphony orchestras. In fact, we have conductors of orchestras in America, like Eugene Ormandy and Georg Szell. We gave atomic scientists, composers, Hallmark cards, the Rubic’s Cube, holograms … and hundreds of other inventions.
The celebration yesterday was not with “Pomp and Circumstance” as we celebrate it at home. We have parades from all regions of Hungary with their costumed huszars on white horses at the beginning of the Catholic Church with their priests. But I would not swap all that pomp with the happiness of the seniors of Magnolia Manor. The only small dent were those who I invited who had “other engagements.” In other words, “not interested.” It was their loss.
I just wanted you to know, anytime I put on a program about Hungary, the results are the same.
