ALBANY, Ga. — The attraction of classic cars and racing motorcycles remains strong among local residents.

The Albany Police Department's Family Protection unit offers a "Family Day at the Track" today for everyone interested in the beauty of classic cars and the excitement of motorcycle racing.

"The proceeds of the day at the track will benefit outreach efforts of the family protection team," said Kawaski Barnes, one of the unit's investigators. "The efforts include things like the East Albany picnic we had. Part of our mission is to be friendly partners with the community in protecting families."

Although it is hard to imagine children not interested in the roaring motorcycles from the Another Level Motorcycle Club racing at the track, Barnes promised other child-friendly attractions.

"We'll have face painting, bouncy houses and a dance contest," Barnes said. "There will be music and food vendors starting at 2 in the afternoon when the gates open. The cars and the motorcycles will be judged around 4."

A driver of a pickup proved the lure of classic cars is very much alive in Albany. Charles Nelson stopped his truck on Front Street at Veterans Memorial Park to admire a 1969 Pontiac Bonneville Barnes drove to the park Friday.

"That Bonneville is almost the same color as my (19)72 Olds Cutlass convertible," Nelson said. "I just had to stop. Want to see pictures of my Cutlass?"
