ALBANY — The Albany Police Department was called to the Riverside Cemetery vicinity Monday evening after someone discovered what officials say is a possible human skull.
Authorities started processing the scene, located at the intersection of South Jackson and Front streets, immediately afterward. The initial discovery was made at around 6:20 p.m. and kept officers in the area until roughly 8 p.m.
Phyllis Banks, a spokeswoman for the APD, said someone was doing work near the Albany Civic Center when he came across a black bag containing the skull.
“(The person) saw what appeared to be a human skull,” Banks said. “The coroner is taking it to the (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) crime lab for analysis.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, a process that includes interviewing the person who found it.
It is unclear at this point where the skull might have come from.
“We will explore every avenue possible,” Banks said.
Banks also added that the skull appeared to be aged.
No further information was available on the incident Monday evening.
